Biophysicist

Lecture

1. General characteristics of the profession

A specialist in the field of biophysics (a science that studies physical and physicochemical processes in living organisms at all levels of the organization of living matter, as well as the fine structure of various biological systems).

2. Official duties

The development of biophysics is associated with the interpenetration of methods of theoretical approaches of biology, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Biophysics includes the following main sections: molecular biophysics (the study of biological phenomena from the point of view of the interaction and interposition of atoms, ions, radicals and molecules), cell biophysics (where the central problems are the permeability of biological membranes for various substances and bioelectric phenomena in the cell), biophysics management and regulation processes (cybernetic aspects of biomechanics, the study of feedback in biological systems). Biophysics is also studying the effects on the body of such physical factors as vibration, acceleration, weightlessness, explores the biological effect of ionizing radiation, performs physical analysis of the activity of the sensory organs and analysis of the organs of motion, respiration, blood circulation as physical systems, solves issues of tissue strength and elasticity. Modern biophysics is closely connected, both by methods and by problems, with biochemistry, genetics, cytology and, in general, with molecular biology. Biophysical studies are predominantly experimental. Therefore, in addition to extensive natural science erudition and sufficient mathematical training necessary to build theoretical models of the processes and phenomena under study, the biophysicist should possess a number of laboratory skills. He should be well aware of the equipment used in the experiments, understand the electronics, be able to prepare the experiment and specify the methodology in the course of the experiment.

3. Qualification requirements

Biological Faculty of the University.
