Bionic

Lecture

1. General characteristics of the profession

Specialist in the field of bionics (scientific discipline related to the search for opportunities to solve various engineering problems based on the analysis of the structure and vital activity of organisms).

2. Official duties

Bionics is therefore closely connected with both biology, physics, chemistry, and cybernetics, as well as with engineering disciplines - electronics, communication, navigation, etc. Among the main areas of work in bionics are the study of the nervous system and the simulation of nerve cells and the connections between them in order to improve computer technology and develop new elements and devices for automation and telemechanics (neurobionics); the study of the senses in order to create various sensors and detection systems; the study of the principles of orientation, location and navigation in animals for use in technology. An important place in bionics is given to the study of the morphological features of living organisms in order to advance new technical and scientific ideas - for example, studying the skin of high-speed aquatic animals (for example, a dolphin) allowed us to create a special skin for ships and increase, thereby, their speed by 15-20% . Studying the flight of birds and insects, the movement of jumping animals, the structure of joints, etc., bionics are developing new principles of flight, wheelless motion, construction of bearings, various manipulators. The spectrum of methods used by bionics is, therefore, extremely wide - from the classical methods of anatomical preparation to the creation of mathematical models of the phenomena and structures under study. Bionics have to work with a scalpel and a soldering iron, entomological net and slide rule. A broad general biological and ethological erudition should be combined with a thorough mathematical preparation, the ability to find extraordinary engineering solutions, a taste for technical design.

3. Qualification requirements

Biological faculties of universities.
