Significant other - a person who is important for the life of the individual

Lecture

Other meaningful (eng. Significant other, SO ) is a general term for a person who is important for the life of an individual, for example, a family member or close friend [1]. The term significant other was first used by the American psychiatrist, psychotherapist and psychoanalyst Harry Stack Sullivan.

“Meaningful Other” is also used as an non-gender term to refer to a partner / partner in an intimate relationship [1], without disclosing and not implying any information about marital status, proximity of relationships or sexual orientation [2].

In this sense, the term in English-speaking countries is sometimes used in invitations, such as weddings and office parties [ source not specified 1427 days ], and is becoming more common among some groups of the population, especially young people [3].
