6.7. Organization of connection with the provider (Internet access)

Lecture

When performing any type of work in global networks, the initial stage is to connect with the provider via modem. The method of connection (Dial-Up, dedicated channel) determines the method of connecting to the provider and entering the Internet. Let us analyze the connection in the Dial-Up connection mode using the TCP / IP protocol, with it meant that the Start / Settings / Control Panel / Network / Configuration TCP protocol is already installed.

There are two ways to connect to the provider:

1) using the Remote Access tool, after which the programs for work with the Internet are called;

2) through a special program working with the Internet, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer. If there is no connection with the provider, the program itself establishes a connection with it.

In both cases, it is necessary to create a Connection, through which communication with the provider is established. In this case, the TCP / IP communication protocol must be configured in a special way. To create such a connection, you can use the Internet Connection Wizard. His shortcut is most often found on the desktop. The Internet Connection Wizard can also be called up directly from Internet Explorer (IE). For this purpose, in IE5, you need to execute the Tools / Internet Options / Connection menu commands and click the Install button in the window that opens, and then follow the Wizard’s instructions. After these procedures, the Connection will not only be made, but the TCP / IP protocol will also be configured in the necessary way. It is useful to be able to do this setting yourself, by doing the following:

1) creating a normal connection with the phone number of the provider;

2) click on the created Connection with the right mouse button and select the Properties command from the context menu;

3) selection in the opened window of the Server type tab, as well as:

determining the type of remote access server (usually PPP);

Placing the TCP / IP network protocol flag, unchecking all other flags in this window. If necessary, flagging other flags, you need to clarify this according to the instructions of the provider;

click on the TCP / IP Setup button;

4) a note in the opened window Setting TCP / IP selectors. IP addresses in the upper part of the window are assigned by the server, and addresses in the center of the window must be entered manually. In the center of the window you should also specify the IP addresses of the provider. In the same window, the flags are most often used. Use IP header compression and Use standard gateway for remote network. The value of the last flags should be clarified with the provider. To implement such a connection, it is necessary that the TCP / IP flag be checked in the Control Panel / Network / Configuration in the Binding tab of the Properties window for the Remote Access Controller.

If the provider has several input phones, a separate connection is created for each of them. Any connection must be configured by the user in this way.

The password for connecting to the provider can be entered each time during the connection process or remembered and entered automatically. When connecting to the provider, a message is issued in which a certain transmission rate is given; If this speed does not suit the user, then the connection must be broken and repeated again.
