Electrostriction

Lecture

Electrostriction - the effect of changing the linear dimensions of a substance when an electric field is applied to it. It is observed absolutely in all substances (in contrast to the piezoelectric effect, which exists only in crystals with a certain symmetry).

The connection between the deformation and the electric field is quadratic. The linear relationship between the deformation and the electric field is observed in piezoelectrics.

The highest values of electrostriction are observed in substances that are called ferroelectric relaxors.

Formally, the electrostriction coefficient is a fourth-rank tensor ( Electrostriction ), depending on the mechanical stress (second rank tensor Electrostriction ) and polarization (first rank tensors Electrostriction , Electrostriction ).
